Science Behind Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a practice that has been around for over 2000 years and is a part of the Chinese Medicine system. The main goal of acupuncture is to restore and maintain balance in both the body and mind. It is a practice that has helped many people over the years.
Modern science has now demonstrated that this specialist technique can:
-
Regulate the nervous system, resetting and restoring the body and mind.
-
Improve local blood supply, tissue healing and the immune system.
-
Modulate the bodies response to pain.
-
Encourage the release of chemicals in the body such as Dopamine, Serotonin and Endorphins, thus affecting our sleep, mood and energy levels.
-
Regulate the hormonal system.
Acupuncture is a safe effective treatment option with minimal risk/side effects when carried out by a trained healthcare professional.
Single use sterile extremely fine needles are placed into various points of the body for 20-30 minutes. You may feel a slight sensation at the site, which is a good sign that your body is responding and then you will feel extremely relaxed and enjoy some you time while you body is restoring balance.

In some instances, acupuncture can provide immediate relief for short lived complaints. However for longer term complaints, acupuncture, like most medical treatment, treatment is a cumulative. Generally I recommend 4-6 treatments, followed by a review of your progress.

Discover the Benefits of Acupuncture
Are you considering acupuncture to relieve pain or improve your overall well-being? You’re not alone. Many people turn to acupuncture to help manage specific conditions, especially when it comes to pain relief. Whether you're dealing with tension headaches, migraines, neck or back pain, knee osteoarthritis, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, acupuncture has been shown in clinical trials to provide relief, even if just for the short term.
But the benefits of acupuncture don’t stop at treating just one condition. Because acupuncture works holistically, targeting your entire body rather than just isolated symptoms, many people notice improvements in other areas of their health. For instance, those with no clear diagnosis but who feel their body is "out of balance" often find relief through acupuncture. Once they experience the benefits, many people choose to continue with regular sessions for maintenance or relaxation.
Acupuncture can also help with preventing flare-ups for certain conditions, such as migraines, offering long-term benefits. There’s even clinical evidence that it provides short-term relief for overactive bladder symptoms.
One of the great advantages of acupuncture is that it can be safely combined with other therapies and medications in most situations. This makes it a flexible and integrative treatment option for a wide range of health concerns.
Over the last decade, research into acupuncture has strengthened, particularly in relation to chronic pain management. In 2017, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) published a report confirming that acupuncture is not just a placebo—it can effectively treat chronic pain.
However, while the evidence is solid for certain conditions, there are still areas where more high-quality clinical trials are needed. To explore more research on acupuncture, check out this A-Z guide on acupuncture evidence.
